David Nixon commença à pratiquer la magie dès son plus jeune âge. Son père, avocat et magicien amateur, emmena David voir des artistes comme Nevil Maskelyne et David Devant. En 1938, Nixon rejoignit The Magic Circle et un groupe local comme contrebassiste.
Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, exempté de combat pour des raisons médicales, Nixon partit en tournée avec l'ENSA (Entertainments National Service Association). En 1954, il fut invité à participer à l'émission de la BBC « What's My Line ?», ce qui le rendit célèbre. Parmi ses nombreuses émissions de magie, on compte « Trix n Nixon » (1962), « Tonight with David Nixon » (1969), « David Nixon's Magic Box » (1970-1971) et « The David Nixon Show » (1972-1977).
