Biography
Carl Cloutier was born on October 28, 1955 in St-Alban, Quebec. As a child, he become interested in the wonders of conjuring with the help of his mentor Stéphano, whose real name was Lucien Boucher (1923 - 2012). The professor can boast of having been in the good years of Le Zoo du Capitaine Bonhomme, with the actor Michel Noël, and of having inspired a star to become.
Carl Cloutier's adolescence was spent in front of a piano, where for nine years he studied classical. The theater also monopolized him, to the point of delving into its workings for five years. His voice and his presence brought him to the microphone of CKVL FM in 1976, where at the age of 20, he hosted the first live discotheque for two consecutive years. Audience ratings are close to a million listeners. It is a success! But Carl hangs up his microphone and returns to the magic he never really forgot.
At the age of 22, he untied his hands and embraced close-up as the ultimate means of expressing his art. “I always preferred the style of European magicians. They are more real. The Americans have nothing in the content. They dance for three minutes, but the illusion they present lasts fifteen seconds! I love magic, but I can say that I'm not a magic freak. My house is not decorated with posters of great dead magicians. If someone comes into my house for the first time, they have no idea that I’m a magician.”
On Carl Cloutier's CV, more than 80 TV shows. The very first was with singer Michel Louvain, at the time when the latter hosted De Bonne Humeur on the TVA network. Three returns followed. Les Démons du Midi, a show presented on Radio-Canada, welcomed him with open arms 8 times. The list is long and it goes all the way to the Everest of magic shows. Recorded at Ceasar's Palace in Las Vegas, Carl Cloutier performs at the fourth annual World Greatest Magic. The show was broadcast on the NBC network in 1997. The biggest heads of magic are there. Carl triumphs! “Guest magicians had one day to record their act. When my turn came, one take was enough. After an hour, I was gone! I love the spontaneous reaction from people that a first take gives me.”
The friendliest magician in Quebec has a collection of trophies that would make other stars in the business jealous. Carl Cloutier won first place in the five biggest magic competitions around the world. A feat that he alone has achieved. In 1992, he won first prize at the International Brotherhood of Magician (IBM) and at the European Championships in London. He continued the feat the following year, in Las Vegas, for the 16th Desert Magic Seminar where 900 magicians awarded him first place and the Siegfried and Roy Golden Lion trophy. In May 1994, there was consecration at the World Magic Summit in Washington and three months later, there was euphoria at the World Championships of the International Federation of Magical Societies (FISM) in Japan. “I had prepared eight months in advance for the event. In Japan, it was so hot the day of the competition that my friend Gary Ouellet locked me in a freezer before I went on stage. I was fresh when my turn came!”
To qualify as a world champion, it’s not enough to do a few TV shows or give tons of interviews. It takes years of practice, countless hours practicing in front of a mirror and perfecting each of your movements. The illusion must be perfect, the mystery must remain complete. Carl Cloutier has the merit of being this fantastic magician whose reputation is worldwide. But above all for this gentleman, real life is family, friends and a good game of golf. Carl Cloutier is the world specialist in sleeving (retraction-recovery on the sleeves) and topit (retraction-recovery on the inside of the jacket).
