Biography
Gerard Majax was born on April 28, 1943 in Nice. As a child, he arrived in Paris with his parents and considered a career in teaching, while becoming fascinated by magic, which he discovered through reading Mandrake the Magician. He studied at the Ecole Normale, then obtained a degree in psychology at the Sorbonne. At the same time, to gain his independence, he performed magic tricks in Parisian cabarets. Ultimately, it was his meeting with Eddie Barclay in the early 1970s that would be decisive for the rest of his career. Through Barclay, the young magician meets artistic agent Johnny Stark. Convinced of his potential, he took him under his wing and allowed him to participate in the Music Hall of France tour in many countries.
Gerard Majax was noticed by a program director at Antenne 2 who entrusted him with the show Y'a un truc. The magician enjoyed great success on the small screen and continued on shows for several years; Abracadabra, Passe-passe, Magie-surprise, La caverne d'Abracadabra and finally Magie-Majax . At the beginning of the 90s, he continued his career as an animator in Japan, which helped to increase his notoriety. Between 1994 and 1995, he found Frédérique Hoschedé in the Club Dorothée . He continued his collaborations with a section in the show C'est l'heure presented by Jean-Luc Delarue in 1998, then in Les 7 péchés capitaux presented by Julien Courbet the following year. At the same time, he is the author of 29 books on magic .
Majax is also known for the creation of the Hallucinoscope. This invention is a virtual reality system without electronics which made it possible to create optical illusions that defy the perception of reality. Introduced in 2000, the Hallucinoscope offers spectators the unique experience of passing through matter or walking in levitation. It thus enriches the magical performances with an advanced technological dimension, without the use of electronic gadgets. It works thanks to an ingenious system of mirrors that transforms reality. The Hallucinoscope has been used in environments as varied as museums and amusement parks. Although somewhat outdated today by more expensive and complex systems, this invention offered the possibility of living visual experiences that were quite original for the time.
In 2007, he founded and managed Les Éditions Abracadabra until 2012. The illusionist also continues his shows; The treasure of the fairy Aquarella, Conquering the paranormal, Everything is possible, and The underside of the Magic-Hall. But in 2014, he organized an auction during which he sold his magic accessories. Gerard Majax is a friend of the Canadian Conservatory of Magic and we are honored to have him among our inductees.
